INITIATIVES

Tata Steel’s first scrap-based Electric Arc Furnace in India in Ludhiana, Punjab will use 100% steel scrap as raw material, sourcing ~40% scrap from the Company’s steel recycling plant in Rohtak, Haryana.

Significant carbon intensity reduction vs BF‑BOF route: Steel produced through the scrap‑based Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) route can reduce CO₂ emissions by ~90% compared to the traditional blast‑furnace route, making EAF a critical enabler of Tata Steel’s decarbonisation strategy.

In the Netherlands Zeremis® Recycled offers steel with ~30% recycled content, helping customers achieve their short-term circularity targets.

The upcoming 3 MTPA scrap‑based Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) at Port Talbot in the UK is expected to reduce Port Talbot’s carbon emissions by approximately 90%, equivalent to 5 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, while securing high-quality sustainable steel production.

FerroHaat has significantly enhanced traceability, compliance, and scalability in scrap sourcing, while supporting formalisation of the recycling sector. The app is available on App Store and Google Play Store for download and facilitates scrap transactions in a few clicks.

In Thailand, Tata Steel operates three scrap‑based EAF facilities for the production of long products such as rebars and wire rods, leading the way in green steel manufacturing.

Applications

We actively implement the 4R methodology: Reduce, Reuse, Recover and Recycle, to eliminate waste and preserve value. We have launched the first-of-its-kind FerroHaat app to facilitate scrap collection from obsolete households, construction & demolition, industries, and end-of-life vehicles.

Our first state-of-the-art steel scrap recycling plant, with 0.5 million tonnes capacity, was set up in Rohtak, Haryana, in 2021. The scrap is processed through mechanised equipment such as shredders and balers and the high-quality scrap is supplied for downstream steel making.

Besides sustainability benefits, the Steel Recycling Business is aligned with Tata Steel's long products strategy. It will cater to the scrap requirement of the newly inaugurated Electric Arc Furnace at Ludhiana, Punjab, paving the way for sustainable steelmaking for the Company in India.
